Letter #124

[Ioannes DANTISCUS] to [Samuel MACIEJOWSKI]
Heilsberg (Lidzbark), [1543]-12-01

English register:

The city councillors of Gdańsk (Danzig) have written to Dantiscus to express their dissatisfaction with the delay caused by the duke in Prussia [Albrecht von Hohenzollern]. He failed to forward the letter from the younger king [Sigismund Augustus], in which the monarch intercedes with the elder king [Sigismund I Jagiellon] on behalf of the two mayors [Barthel Brand and Tiedemann Giese Jr], via the same messenger who had delivered the letter. That letter is now being forwarded, along with a request to enclose with it Dantiscus’ letters to the king and to the present addressee. Dantiscus asks that the defendants be informed of the time and place of their appearance before the beginning of the Diet of the Kingdom and that they be treated with leniency, which he will elaborate on in a letter the defendants will bring with them.
