Letter #4846
Ioannes DANTISCUS to Ermland (Warmia) ChapterHeilsberg (Lidzbark), 1544-06-17
English register:
Ioannes Dantiscus notes that during his most recent visit to the diocese capital [Frauenburg (Frombork)], he presented to the chapter postulates submitted by all the estates at the Diet [of Royal Prussia] in Marienburg (Malbork). At the time, he deemed it appropriate to convene an assembly with his subjects to deliberate on matters that might pose a threat to their rights and liberties. The chapter, for its part, was to convene with its own subjects to that end. Upon further reflection, however, he reached the conclusion that it would be necessary to await the resolutions of the Diet [of Royal Prussia] in Graudenz (Grudziądz), and only thereafter to address them at an assembly with his subjects. He therefore considers it advisable that the chapter delegate two of its members to travel with him to attend the proceedings of the Diet, scheduled for 29 September. He requests the chapter's opinion on this position.
