Ioannes DANTISCUS to Sigismund I Jagiellon
Heilsberg (Lidzbark), 1541-11-16

English register:

In view of the good neighbourly relations he maintains with the duke in Prussia [Albrecht I von Hohenzollern], Dantiscus intercedes on his behalf with the king [Sigismund I Jagiellon], petitioning for a fair resolution of the border dispute between [the Duchy of] Prussia and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

He asks that this matter not be handled hastily, but rather be conducted in accordance with the ancient descriptions of the border delineations. The duke himself has repeatedly demanded a revision, as he considers himself to have been wrongfully dispossessed. The Diet of the Duchy of Prussia has sent a diplomatic mission to the king regarding this issue. According to Dantiscus, if those envoys are received fairly, the duke will be pacified and his subjects will be rendered more obedient, a matter of major importance in these troubled times.
