The secretary of the town council of Elbing (Elbląg) is departing for the royal court [of Sigismund I] with this letter, in order to clear the council of the charges formulated in the lawsuit brought about by a fellow citizen, Peter Schissenteuber. He has reopened a case adjudicated the previous year by the Council of Royal Prussia at the diet in Graudenz (Grudziądz). Previously, he had agreed to accept the case as settled and expressed no intention of appealing, despite being advised of such a possibility. He notified neither the councillors nor the opposing party of the appeal, yet under its pretext, he obtained a royal summons.

Although the appeal exposes the town council to unjustified costs, its members did not wish to risk a charge of non-appearance and decided to comply with the royal summons. The councillors turned to Dantiscus with a request to present the case to the addressee and to Samuel Maciejowski, Bishop of Cracow, and to intercede on their behalf. He has done so in a letter to the bishop. From that letter and from the account of the secretary of Elbing, the addressee will be able to learn the course of the matter more fully.

Dantiscus asks, therefore, as he has previously done through Johann von Höfen (Jan Hartowski), that the addressee, together with the bishop of Cracow, intercede with the king to prevent the admission of appeals lodged solely before a notary and witnesses for the purpose of avoiding court fees. Otherwise, this will cause detriment to the royal statutes and to the courts in Royal Prussia.

Dantiscus trusts that the addressee will support the secretary of Elbing.
