Letter #3411
[] to [Sigismund II Augustus Jagiellon]Heilsberg (Lidzbark), 1548-07-19
English register:
Dantiscus is grateful that the addressee kindly excused his absence at the funeral of the king [Sigismund I Jagiellon]. He had every intention of taking part; however, his health prevents him from undertaking longer journeys to the court. At the same time, he makes assurances of his continued readiness to provide counsel.
The envoys of the city of Elbing (Elbląg) are proceeding to the royal court in order to participate in the king’s funeral and to settle certain matters with the addressee on behalf of the city. Dantiscus asks that they be kindly received and treated with indulgence in the event of any potential lateness, which might arise through no fault of their own. For the delay was caused by the expectation, prevalent in Royal Prussia, that the king would convene a diet before the general Diet of the Kingdom.
