Letter #5375
Ioannes DANTISCUS to [Stanisław MACIEJOWSKI]Heilsberg (Lidzbark), 1541-04-01
English register:
Having learned of the addressee’s planned embassy on behalf of the king [Sigismund I Jagiellon] to the Emperor [Charles V of Habsburg] regarding the banishment of Duke Albrecht, Dantiscus expresses hope that the mission will be successful. He informs that, out of regard for the affection he bears toward the addressee’s brother, the vice-chancellor [Samuel Maciejowski], he has sent letters of recommendation for the addressee to friendly dignitaries of the imperial court: the acting grand chancellor [Nicolas Perrenot] de Granvelle, the bishop of Lund [Johan Weze], and the imperial counselor Cornelis De Schepper.
Dantiscus has sent a copy of his letter to de Granvelle to Duke Albrecht, and expects that the duke will forward it to the addressee. In that letter, Dantiscus described his past diplomatic efforts concerning Albrecht’s banishment [from the Empire]. He encourages the addressee to use this knowledge in the mission. Dantiscus expresses confidence that, given the friendship between the vice-chancellor and Duke Albrecht, the addressee will exert every effort to ensure that matters take a favorable turn for the prince.
