AAWO, AB, D. 6, f. 39r

Ornatissime Praesul.

Equidem optarem mihi dari, si quicquam huiusmodi proficitur votis, vel Nestoream eloquentiam, tantisper dum tanti beneficii memorem gratumque possim exhibere animum, aut qualem AAWO, AB, D. 6, f. 39v dicendi vim veteres poetarum fabulae subnotarunt in Hermes (Mercury), messenger of the gods in Greek and Roman mythologyMercurioHermes (Mercury), messenger of the gods in Greek and Roman mythology, qui ceu magica virga divinaque cythara somnum immittit cum libet et idem adimit, quos vult ad inferos impellens ac rursus ab inferis evocans, aut qualem Ogmius (Ogimios), Celtic deity of wisdom and eloquenceOgmioOgmius (Ogimios), Celtic deity of wisdom and eloquence suo tribuebant The Gauls GalliThe Gauls , qui nimirum ms. omneis reg. omnesomneisms. omneis reg. omnes mortales catenulis a lingua infixis, quo vellet, abduceret, aut qualem certe, ne fabulis immoremur, in Amphion in Greek mythology the son of Zeus and AnthiopeAmphioneAmphion in Greek mythology the son of Zeus and Anthiope Orpheus in Greek mythology a musician, poet, and prophet, who descended to the underworld to rescue his wife EurydiceOrpheoOrpheus in Greek mythology a musician, poet, and prophet, who descended to the underworld to rescue his wife Eurydiceque, quorum alterum rigida movisse saxa, alterum quercus et ornos traxisse cythara, ut vetera poetarum figmenta annotarunt[1]. [1] Cf. Erasmus of Rotterdam, Paraenesis (foreword to Erasmus translation of the New Testament, 1516): Immo, si cui unquam talis contigit dicendi vis, qualem non omnino sine causa veterum poetarum fabulae subnotarunt in Mercurio, qui ceu magica virga divinaque cithara somnum immittit cum libet et idem adimit, quos vult ad inferos impellens ac rursus ab inferis evocans, aut qualem signarunt in Amphione Orpheoque, quorum alter rigida movisse saxa, alter quercus et ornos traxisse cithara fingitur; aut qualem Ogmio suo tribuebant Galli mortales omnes catenulis a lingua in aures infixis quo vellet circumducenti.
