Letter #1467

Matthias, Abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Koronowo to Ioannes DANTISCUS
Koronowo, 1536-06-18

English register: Abbot Matthias claims that his last statement on the circumstances of the death of Matthias, guardian [of the Franciscans] in Kulm, does not stand in contradiction to earlier ones; he reiterates that the guardian died and was buried at his convent, but without revealing the circumstances in which he had received his injuries or the assailant’s identity. The statement of the jury court that Dantiscus is unhappy about was based on the testimony of people who took part in the funeral — they did not see the body because the deceased was dressed in a habit; the women who washed the body before the funeral saw some yellow marks on it; the Abbot was told that these were the effect of a fall into a ditch [near] the furnace in front of the baths (in fossam fornacis ante balneum). The Abbot insists that he had not intended in any way to offend the addressee.

Sanitatem et bonam valetudinem Vestrae Paternitatis Reverendissimae tum ex cf. [Ioannes DANTISCUS] to [Matthias, Abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Koronowo] Löbau (Lubawa), 1536-06-16, CIDTC IDL 1487litteriscf. [Ioannes DANTISCUS] to [Matthias, Abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Koronowo] Löbau (Lubawa), 1536-06-16, CIDTC IDL 1487, tum ex nuntio percipiens, multum sum in animo exhilaratus.
