Letter #2498
Ioannes [DANTISCUS] to UNKNOWN [Ermland (Warmia) Canon]Heilsberg (Lidzbark), 1541-09-28
English register:
Dantiscus replies to the letter of 14 September, in which the addressee interceded on behalf of the custodian [of the Prussian province of the Franciscan Order, Johann Rollau]. Dantiscus declares that he has already forgiven him for the slanderous report to the royal court, which alleged that Dantiscus had expelled the friars from Braunsberg (Braniewo) and Wartenburg.
He does not deny the custodian and his brethren the right to beg; however, since they do not acknowledge Dantiscus’ authority within his domain, the custodian should not, in these times, expect his protection in case of danger on the road or in taverns.
The custodian is claiming inheritance in Braunsberg (Braniewo) in vain, as he has renounced worldly things by taking monastic vows. Dantiscus replies to the addressee not to think that his intercession is without significance.
