[Ioannes DANTISCUS] to Mikołaj GRABIA

Dantiscus offers thanks for information regarding the diplomatic mission presented by [Jean de Monluc], envoy of the king of France [Henry II Valois], as well as for the declaration to take up the case of the widow [Katarina Schewecke] of Georg Schewecke. He asks for continued support for the widow.

Dantiscus has just sent to Stanisław Hozjusz (Hosius) a copy of the appeal lodged by the widow’s opponents in the presence of a notary and witnesses. After reading it, the addressee can see for himself that they had no legal grounds to appeal to the king [Sigismund I Jagiellon]. Their main argument is that they were allegedly not allowed to be summoned before the royal court outside the territory of Prussia.

However, it is accepted that the king summons parties in exactly this manner, as evidenced by numerous examples. Had the widow’s opponents wished to challenge the earlier judicial decision, they should have done so within the timeframe set by the king in the ruling. However, they did not raise this issue at that time, neither upon the announcement of the ruling nor during the confirmation of the endowment. In Dantiscus’ opinion, their actions are intended only to protract the case and force the widow to incur higher costs. He asks the addressee to thwart their intentions.
