Letter #3323
[Ioannes DANTISCUS] to Johann von HÖFEN (Jan HARTOWSKI)Heilsberg (Lidzbark), 1548-01-17
English register:
Through the efforts of Dantiscus, the betrothal of the addressee’s sister, Dorota, and Peter Brasch, a burgher of Heilsberg (Lidzbark), has taken place recently. As the fiancé is quite wealthy and industrious, the sister will be well provided for. Additionally, Dantiscus has granted to her eight manses of arable land near Heilsberg, managed together with the addressee. He could have sold the land for 30 marks, but since he treats her like a daughter, he wished to provide her with a proper dowry. The wedding will take place this coming Sunday, 22 January.
Dantiscus had intended to give prior notice of the wedding so that the addressee could take part in it, but he dispatched the messenger to the royal court too late. The addressee will be able to visit his sister and brother-in-law at a later date. Dantiscus declares his care for the newlyweds. He urges the addressee to show kindness to his brother-in-law, which shall be reciprocated.
He asks for any news from the court, as well as any reports arriving there, to be conveyed to him.
