Letter #3876

[Ioannes DANTISCUS] to [Łukasz GÓRKA]
Heilsberg (Lidzbark Warmiński), 1539-08-01

English register:

Dantiscus comes to the defence of the Bishop of Kulm (Chełmno) [Tiedemann Giese], who was recently sharply reprimanded in a letter from the Archbishop of Gniezno [Jan Latalski] for disobedience and evading his jurisdiction. The Archbishop threatened he would inform on Giese to the King [Sigismund I Jagiellon]. Meanwhile, according to the bull of confirmation that Dantiscus received when he was taking over the Kulm diocese, the bishops of Kulm are subordinate to the archbishop of Riga. Giese is happy to leave the Archbishop of Riga [Thomas Schöning] if the Pope [Paul III] should so decide, but according to Dantiscus it is not possible to do so sooner without causing great confusion. Dantiscus asks the addressee to justify and defend Giese before the King.

From Giese’s letter the addressee will learn of the violence he suffered from [the gentry of] Dobrzyń Land (Ziemia Dobrzyńska) and [Kulm Land (Ziemia Chełmińska)] (nostratibus in iurisdictione sua). He also asks for advice and for support for Giese on this matter at the royal court.
